For Barthes, the funtion of the mythologists, as opposed to that of the myth-makers, was to counter myth by exposing what he saw as delusion or lies (…) He wished to open the eyes of the public to the fact that what might appear “innocent” and “perfectly natural” was largely the result of distortion and misinterpretation, motivated by ideology. He thought that demystification would successfully weaken the power of myth and the powerful economic and political intesersts that it served.
