The continuation of the East Australian Current along the eastern coast of New Zealand's North Island; the current is thus part of the western boundary current system of the South Pacific subtropical gyre. During summer (December–March) it continues southward as the East Cape Current to reach the Chatham Rise. During winter (June–August) some of it separates from the shelf and flows eastward into the Pacific, forming a temperature front along 29°S.
Industry:Weather
The continuation of the Somali Current along the eastern Arabian peninsula during the southwest monsoon (June–October) with peak speeds in May of 0. 5–0. 8 m s−1. It is associated with coastal upwelling during May–September, when sea surface temperatures along the coast are lowered by about 5°C.
Industry:Weather
The sudden, cyclic movement of the earth caused by the release of strain inside the earth. This movement causes faulting. Earthquakes often occur along tectonic plate boundaries.
Industry:Weather
Closely related to, but not identical to, the dark segment seen in clear twilight skies.
Industry:Weather
That portion of the Antarctic Ice Sheet lying predominantly in the Eastern Hemisphere. A line following the Transantarctic Mountains to the Antarctic Peninsula serves as the boundary between the East and West Antarctic Ice Sheets.
Industry:Weather
In oceanography, the excess of the actual geopotential difference, between two given isobaric surfaces, over the geopotential difference in a homogeneous water column of salinity of 35 psu and temperature 0°C.
Industry:Weather
The physical structure formed by the conductive earth and the conductive lower ionosphere (D region) that together sandwich the highly resistive atmosphere between them. This waveguide sustains global electromagnetic wave propagation from the lower end of the Schumann resonance band (5 Hz) to the waveguide cut-off frequency near 1500 Hz, beyond which the radiation will not be retained within the waveguide.
Industry:Weather
Tidal movements of the solid earth due to direct gravitational forcing and loading of the adjacent seabed by marine tides.
Industry:Weather
The combination of the atmospheric radiation budget and the surface radiation budget. This is also the net radiant flux density (solar plus terrestrial) at the top of the atmosphere, averaged over a specified time interval.
Industry:Weather
Light reflected by the earth; analogous to moonlight. Earthlight is what enables one to see the portions of the moon that are not sunlit.
