Forecasts used to provide warnings for people to evacuate areas threatened by floods, and to help in the operation of flood control structures.

Frequent abbreviation for facsimile equipment.
Industry:Weather
For ice, the physical relation between stress in a material and the strain rate or deformation rate of the material. It represents a macroscopic, continuum approximation of the processes occurring within the material and typically contains parameters (often called constants) that must be determined from experiments. Most flow “laws” are simplifications of some more general relation and are valid only within some range of temperature, stress, etc. , for which a given deformational process is dominant.
Industry:Weather
Fine airborne particulates carried out of a boiler by waste gases after the combustion of solid fuel, for example, coal, and expelled as noncombustible airborne emissions or recovered as by-products for commercial use. See aerosol, air pollution.
Industry:Weather
Fluid naturally present in a rock unit (formation).
Industry:Weather
Fog associated with frontal zones and frontal passages. It is usually divided into three types: warm-front prefrontal fog; cold-front post-frontal fog; and frontal-passage fog. The first two types are a result of rain falling into cold stable air and raising the dewpoint temperature. Frontal-passage fog can result from the “mixing of warm and cold air masses in the frontal zone” or by “sudden cooling of air over moist ground. ”
Industry:Weather
Equipment for launching a radiosonde and maintaining it aloft, typically consisting of a radiosonde balloon, a parachute, a de-reeler, and a string to mate them together.
Industry:Weather
Estimated maximum amount of water that can be supplied by a reservoir under specified conditions.
Industry:Weather
Experimental apparatus for investigating the interaction between liquids and solid surfaces. The method involves the introduction of fine solid particles into a humidified reactor, followed by rapid cooling, to condense a layer of liquid onto the particles. Samples of the droplets can then be analyzed after a given time to quantify the extent of reaction that has occurred.

Eddies formed by pinching off of meanders in the Gulf Stream. Eddies forming to the north (coastward side) of the Gulf Stream are called warm-core rings (anticyclonic) because they encapsulate relatively warm Sargasso Sea water in the pinching off process, and those forming to the south (oceanward side) are called cold-core rings because they encapsulate relatively cold Slope Water in their centers.
