Company Profile:
The American Meteorological Society promotes the development and dissemination of information and education on the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic sciences and the advancement of their professional applications. Founded in 1919, AMS has a membership of more than 14,000 professionals, ...
A device used in atmospheric electric measurements for the removal of induction charge on apparatus. It is based upon the principle that products of combustion are ionized and will consequently conduct electricity from charged bodies. See collector.
Industry:Weather
A direct-vision nephoscope that consists of a grid work of bars mounted horizontally on the end of a vertical column and made free to rotate about the vertical axis. The observer rotates the grid and adjusts his position until some feature of the cloud appears to move along the major axis of the grid. The azimuth angle at which the grid is set is taken as the direction of cloud motion.
Industry:Weather
A distance of 1 m in geopotential height.
Industry:Weather
A dry, scorching wind of Great Britain and the Isle of Man.
Industry:Weather
A finite-amplitude rotational gravity wave. The Gerstner wave formulas are exact solutions of the equations of motion for a homogeneous incompressible fluid with a free surface.
Industry:Weather
A false annual growth ring in the trunk of a tree, due to out-of-season defoliation by frost and subsequent regrowth of foliage. A frost ring is identified by a thin light ring within the annual growth ring.
Industry:Weather
A detailed statement of the intended route, altitude, and time of a proposed aircraft flight. Most flight plans also include notation of existing and forecast weather conditions at destination (and alternate airport, if required) as well as airspeed and ground speed estimates. Compare clearance, pilot briefing.
Industry:Weather
A current in which the balance in the horizontal components of the equations of motion is between the horizontal pressure gradient and the Coriolis force. The vertical component is in hydrostatic balance and the pressure increases with depth in proportion to the mass of water above. If pressure is mapped on a level surface (geopotential), then geostrophic flow is parallel to the isobars, with high pressure to the right (left) of the flow in the Northern (Southern) Hemisphere. For the geostrophic balance to hold, the flow must be steady, very weak, large-scale, and friction-free.
Industry:Weather
A cyclone formed (or at least enhanced) as a result of the foehn process on the lee side of a mountain range. A mid-latitude, north–south mountain range provides the best inducement for this type of development. The Alberta low and the Colorado low of the eastern slopes of the Rockies are good examples. See dynamic trough.
Industry:Weather
A day when fog is observed at an observation point.
