A closed vessel in which the temperature, pressure, and humidity are controlled in a manner to cause cloud formation in the air within the enclosed space. Cloud chambers were used for early studies of high-energy particles such as cosmic rays (see Wilson cloud chamber). Meteorological versions have been used for studying cloud microphysical processes. They usually range in size from a few cubic centimeters to a few cubic meters, although cloud chambers as large as hundreds of cubic meters have been constructed.
Industry:Weather
1. A record obtained from a meteorograph. 2. A chart in which meteorological variables are plotted against time.
Industry:Weather
An instrument that automatically records the measurement of two or more meteorological elements. See aerograph.
Industry:Weather
Groundwater that originates in the atmosphere and reaches the zone of saturation by infiltration and percolation; as opposed to connate and magmatic water. Most groundwater is meteoric in origin.
Industry:Weather
Atmospheric dust that has been produced by meteorites.
Industry:Weather
The ionized trail left by a meteor or meteoritic particle entering the atmosphere; a part of the composite phenomenon known as a meteor. Radar measurements of the drift of meteor trails are used to infer wind motions in the upper mesosphere.
Industry:Weather
A quasi-persistent, nearly stationary, east–west-oriented weak baroclinic zone in the lower troposphere that typically stretches from the east China coast, across Taiwan, and eastward into the Pacific, south of Japan. The term “mei-yu” is the Chinese expression for “plum rains. ” The mei-yu front generally occurs from mid- to late spring through early to midsummer. This low-level baroclinic zone typically lies beneath a confluent jet entrance region aloft situated downstream of the Tibetan Plateau. The mei-yu/baiu front is very significant in the weather and climate of southeast Asia as it serves as the focus for persistent heavy convective rainfall associated with mesoscale convective complexes (MCCs) or mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) that propagate eastward along the baroclinic zone. The moisture source is typically the South China Sea and sometimes the Bay of Bengal. The usual lifting mechanism is low-level warm-air advection in association with a low-level jet on the equatorward flank of the baroclinic zone. Deep ascent and resulting organized MCCs/MCSs are especially favored when the low-level warm-air advection is situated beneath the favorable equatorward jet entrance region aloft.
Industry:Weather
Anything in the air; hence meteorology and its concern with hydrometeors, lithometeors, igneous meteors, electrometeors, and optical meteors.
Industry:Weather
The modification of snow grains to a less angular, more rounded form accompanied by a gradual increase in density. Metamorphic processes include sublimation, evaporation, and vapor diffusion.
Industry:Weather
Information that provides enhanced knowledge of the content of data. For example, the format description of a METAR is the metadata about the meteorological data being observed and reported. Literally, metadata are data about data.
