Company Profile:
Founded in 1941, the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) is an international association representing the interests of professionals in surveying, mapping and communicating spatial data relating to the Earth's surface. Today, ACSM's members include more than 7,000 surveyors, ...
The interval of time between two successive, upper transits of the true vernal equinox over some meridian.
Industry:Earth science
A coordinate system devised for locating a satellite's location in (B,L) space, rather than in a spherical coordinate system; B is the local value of the total magnetic field, L is calculated through the use of some relationships among the adiabatic invariants valid in a static dipole field.
Industry:Earth science
A sequence or collection of numbers giving the magnitude of a mathematical variable or measurements. The term is usually applied to numbers obtained by using electrical circuits to convert the amplitude of a voltage, current or other physical quantity to digital form. A single number from the sequence is called a digital datum.
Industry:Earth science
A survey which provides coordinates (horizontal or vertical) of points to which supplementary surveys are adjusted. The fundamental control survey of the United States of America provides the geodetic coordinates and plane coordinates of thousands of triangulation and traverse stations, and the elevations of thousands of bench marks. These are used in hydrographic surveys of the coastal waters, for control of the national topographic survey, and for control of surveys by state, city and private organizations.
Industry:Earth science
The difference between a deflection of the vertical calculated from astronomical observations and the deflection calculated from data on gravity. The term is seldom used. Its meaning is, besides, inconsistent with that given to anomaly in other terms and is often expressed, instead, by residual.
Industry:Earth science
A period of rotation of the Earth with respect to a fictitious star and representing one of the periodic elements in the tidal forces. It approximates in length the lunar or solar day and corresponds to the period of a diurnal constituent or twice the period of a semidiurnal constituent. The term is not applicable to the long-period constituents.
Industry:Earth science
Control put in using electronic devices. (Jargon)
Industry:Earth science
A surface upon which ground control and the graticule of a map are plotted and upon which templets have been assembled or aerotriangulation has been done and the control points thus determined have been marked.
Industry:Earth science
Appropriate and set apart land from one's private property to some public use.
Industry:Earth science
A rocky eminence composed of calcium carbonate created principally by corals, and extending upward from the sea floor to the tidal limit.
