(1) A value believed to be close to the correct value of a quantity. The terms first approximation, second approximation, etc. , are used for sequentially calculated values that are successively closer to the correct value. (2) The process of obtaining a value believed to be close to the correct value of a quantity. Two different processes are recognized: direct approximation, in which an approximation is calculated only once and to a closeness that is considered satisfactory; and (b) successive approximation, in which values successively closer to the correct value are calculated in sequence, the approximation calculated in one step being used as a given value in the next step. The process is repeated until either a satisfactory value is obtained or no change of value occurs or the process begins to diverge or oscillate. This process is also known as an iterative process. Direct approximation provides an answer faster but the formula used are generally more complicated. Successive approximation takes longer to provide the final answer but uses much simpler formula.

A signaling lamp of particular construction, used in some instances for observation of distant triangulation stations at night.
Industry:Earth science
A method of adjusting a triangulation network, in which the network is separated into sets of connecting arcs and the corrections in each arc are determined separately. The results are then modified so that there is no disagreements between coordi-nates at the intersections or junctions of the arcs. The Bowie method of adjusting triangulation is an arc method.
Industry:Earth science
The science of projectiles. It is usually divided into three parts: interior ballistics, which deals with motion of the projectile while it is within or on the launching apparatus; exterior ballistics, which deals with the motion of the projectile after it leaves the apparatus; and penetration ballistics, which deals with the motion of the projectile after hitting the target or other material. Photogrammetry and surveying have been extensively applied, in exterior ballistics, to determining the trajectory of the projectile.
Industry:Earth science
A map used by taxing authorities, showing size and location of properties and improvements.
Industry:Earth science
A mutual fund with, generally, a three-part investment object: (1)to conserve the investor's principal, (2)to pay current income, and (3)to increase both principal and income. The fund aims to achieve this by owning a mixture of bonds, preferred stocks, and common stocks.
Industry:Earth science
(1) The orientation of a body, as specified by the angles made by a set of axes fixed in the body with a set of axes used as reference. In particular, in photogrammetry, (2) the orientation of a camera, or of the photograph taken with that camera, with respect to some external reference system. Usually expressed as tilt, swing and azimuth, or as roll, pitch and yaw.

(1) The act of attaching, adding, joining, or uniting one thing to another; generally spoken of the connection of a smaller or subordinate thing with a larger or principal thing. Attaching an illustrative or auxiliary document to a deposition, pleading, deed, etc. , is called annexing it. So the incorporation of newly-acquired territory into the national domain as an integral part thereof is called annexation, as in the case of the addition of Texas to the United States of America. (2) In the law relating to fixtures, actual annexation includes every movement by which a chattel can be joined or united to the freehold.
