A metalworking or woodworking file that has one flat side. The other side is convex—thicker in the center than at the edges.
Industry:Aviation
A metalworking or woodworking power tool used to change the shape or size of cylindrically shaped objects. The material to be shaped is clamped horizontally in a chuck and is rotated. The unclamped end of the material is steadied by the lathe tail stock. Cutting tools are fed into the material from the side to remove unwanted material.

A meteorological summary that contains information which is considered significant and is not included in a current hazardous weather advisory broadcast. This includes: * Significant meteorological information (SIGMET/WS) * Convective significant meteorological information (convective SIGMET/WST) * Urgent pilot weather reports (urgent PIREP/UUA) * Center weather advisories (CWA) * Airmen’s meteorological information (AIRMET/WA) * Isolated thunderstorms that are rapidly developing and increasing in intensity * Low ceilings and visibilities that are becoming widespread

A meter connected into the automatic volume control (AVC) circuit in a radio receiver. A signal-strength meter is calibrated in decibels (dB) or in “S” units and is used to provide an indication of the strength of the signal being picked up by the receiver.
Industry:Aviation
A method of accessing data from a computer in which all bits of the data are transferred at the same time. Parallel access is different from serial access, in which the data is transferred one bit at a time.
Industry:Aviation
A method of adhesive application in which the adhesive is spread on only one of the two surfaces being joined.
Industry:Aviation
A method of adjusting the phase of one electronic oscillator, so it follows that of another oscillator. The phase of the two signals is compared, and a resultant signal is produced. This resultant signal is used to adjust one oscillator to bring its output exactly into phase with the other.
Industry:Aviation
A method of aerial mapping in which three photographs are taken at the same time of the area being mapped. One photograph is taken vertically downward and the other two are oblique photographs, taken at two different angles. The three photographs are studied with special instruments that show the contours of the terrain. Maps are made from these photographs.
Industry:Aviation
A method of air-cooling an engine in which the cylinders are enclosed in tight-fitting shrouds. The cowling is divided into two compartments by baffles and seals, with half of each cylinder in each compartment. Ram air is directed into one compartment, and the pressure in the other is decreased by air flowing over a flared exit or adjustable cowl flaps. The pressure difference across the cylinders causes cooling air to be drawn through the fins to remove the unwanted heat.
Industry:Aviation
A method of aluminum alloy heat treatment in which the part is heated and quenched (solution heat-treated) and then held at a specified elevated temperature for a period of time. The metal gains additional strength by this process. Artificial aging is also called precipitation heat treatment.
