A set of heavy field windings in a generator connected in series with the armature. The magnetic field produced by the series windings is used to change the characteristics of the generator.
Industry:Aviation
A set of sharp-pointed pins that protrude from the side of a long wood or metal bar (a trammel bar). A trammel bar is used to tram, or square up, the Pratt truss used in an airplane wing.
Industry:Aviation
A set of standards which require aircraft to have a minimum navigation performance capability in order to operate in MNPS designated airspace. In addition, aircraft must be certified by their State of Registry for MNPS operation.
Industry:Aviation
A set of thin metal blades with a series of V-shaped notches cut along one edge of each blade. The notched edge of each gage is compared with the thread being checked until one is found that exactly meshes with it. The number marked on the gage that fits the threads shows the number of threads per inch in the nut or on the bolt.
Industry:Aviation
A severe case of hypoxia, or the serious effect on the human body caused by a lack of oxygen.
Industry:Aviation
A severe compressor stall across the entire face of the compressor. Compressor surges occur when there is a complete stoppage of airflow, or a reversal of flow through the compressor. A compressor surge can cause a flameout or, if it is severe enough, can cause structural damage.
Industry:Aviation
A severe type of damage to moving parts caused when one metal part moves across another without sufficient lubricant between them. Enough heat is generated by friction to cause the high points of the surfaces to weld together, and continued movement tears, or scuffs, the metal.
Industry:Aviation
A shaft used in some gas turbine engines to drive the accessory gearbox. The accessory drive shaft is driven by bevel gears from the compressor shaft.
Industry:Aviation
A shaft used in the mechanism of a pressure-measuring instrument to change the direction of movement by 90° and to amplify the amount of movement.
Rockwell hardness tester. A precision testing machine, used to measure the hardness of a material. A diamond pyramid or hardened steel ball is pressed by an accurately calibrated force into the surface of the material being tested. The depth to which the pyramid or ball penetrates the surface is measured with a dial indicator. The greater the depth of penetration, the softer the material.
Industry:Aviation
