A small turbine installed in the exhaust system of a reciprocating engine. Its purpose is to extract some of the energy from the exhaust gas that would otherwise be lost. The output shaft of the turbine is coupled through a hydraulic clutch to the engine crankshaft.
Industry:Aviation
A small window in the high side of a vapor-cycle cooling system. Liquid refrigerant flows past the sight glass, and if the charge of refrigerant is low, bubbles will be seen. There are no bubbles in the refrigerant of a fully charged system.
Industry:Aviation
A small, adjustable T-square used for marking the ends of wood strips to be cut at an angle other than a right angle. Some miter squares have the blade rigidly set at an angle of 45° to the head, and others have an adjustable blade that can be set at any angle relative to the head.
Industry:Aviation
A small, auxiliary venturi whose discharge is located in the throat of a larger venturi.
Boost venturis increase the pressure drop produced by the main venturi. They are installed in such devices as carburetors and in the large venturi tubes used to provide the low pressure for some vacuum-operated flight instruments.
Industry:Aviation
A small, auxiliary, hand-cranked magneto used with some of the older aircraft engines to provide a hot, retarded spark for starting the engine.
Industry:Aviation
A small, black, helium-filled balloon used to find the height of a base of clouds.
The balloon is released by a weather observer, and the time needed for it to disappear into the clouds is measured. Since both the rate of rise of the balloon and the time it took to disappear into the clouds are known, the height of the base of the clouds can be determined.
Industry:Aviation
A small, black, spherical balloon used to determine the speed and direction of winds in the upper air. The rate of ascension of the balloon is known so its altitude can be determined, and it is followed with a theodolite to determine the speed and direction of the wind.
Industry:Aviation
A small, conical, streamlined cover retained by a bracket attached to the hub of a fixed-pitch wood or metal propeller. The diameter of a skull-cap spinner is the same as that of the propeller hub. The spinner serves as a cover over the propeller retaining bolts or nuts and provides a degree of streamlining.
Industry:Aviation
A small, fine-cut metalworking file used by instrument technicians to repair aircraft instruments. Jeweler’s files are available in many shapes.
