A cold-solder joint has a granular appearance, little physical strength, and a high electrical resistance. Cold-solder joints are undesirable and must be reheated to melt the solder. The solder must then be allowed to solidify completely before the joint is moved.

A solderless, crimped-on connector used to join two wire ends. The splice connector is made in the form of an insulated metal tube. The insulation is stripped from the ends of the wires to be spliced, and the bare wire is slipped into the tube. The tube is then crimped onto the wire. A solderless splice connector forms a joint that is physically as strong as the wire, and it has an extremely low electrical resistance.

A solid aircraft rivet made of 2017 or 2024 aluminum alloy. These rivets are too hard to drive in the condition they are received from the manufacturer, and they must be heat-treated to soften them. They are heated in a furnace and then quenched in water. Immediately after quenching, they are soft, but within a few hours at room temperature, they become quite hard.
Hardening can be delayed for several days by immediately placing the rivets in a subfreezing icebox and holding them at this low temperature until they are used.
