A special type of conductor, used for carrying high-frequency alternating current. Litz wire is made of fine strands of insulated wire, woven together in such a way that any individual strand occupies, at some time, every position in the cross section of the conductor. A special type of electronic guidance system used to allow aircraft to land when the ceiling and visibility are too low for a safe visual approach to the runway. An ILS is made up of four basic parts: the localizer, glide slope, marker beacons, and approach lights. The localizer produces a narrow electronic path extending out along the center line of the instrument runway, to direct the pilot laterally as he approaches the runway.
The glide slope produces a narrow electronic path extending upward from the approach end of the instrument runway at an angle of approximately three degrees. The glide slope directs the pilot vertically as the aircraft approaches the end of the runway.
The marker beacons produce highly directional radio signals to identify the position of the aircraft along the localizer path. When the aircraft is directly over a marker beacon, a distinctive tone is received on the radio, and a colored light on the instrument panel flashes the proper code.
The approach lights are a series of high-intensity lights located along the approach path to help the pilot transition from flying by instruments to flying by visual reference as the aircraft breaks out of the overcast.

A special type of electronic instrument used to measure voltage. Electronic voltmeters use electron tubes or solid-state components, such as field-effect transistors (FET), to amplify the voltage being measured before it is read by the indicating instrument.
An electronic voltmeter has a much higher input impedance than a nonelectronic meter, and it can measure AC voltages having a wider range of frequencies.

A special type of fastener used to prevent damage to a structure that could be caused by squeezing the surfaces together when the nut is tightened on the bolt. The diameter of the shank is larger than the diameter of the threaded portion of the bolt. The length of a shoulder bolt is chosen so its shank is the same length as the thickness of the material being fastened together.

A special type of fuse that allows a large flow of current for a short period of time, but opens the circuit if current in excess of its rating flows for a longer period. Slow-blow fuses are used in electric motor circuits and circuits with incandescent lamps. Both of these circuits have a large inrush of current when the switch is first closed, but when the motor begins to turn, or when the lamp filaments heat up, the current drops to a much lower value.

A special type of hand-held tool used to melt solder. The heating element is a transformer whose secondary winding is a single turn that extends out of the transformer in the form of two connections for the ends of a copper tip.
When the solder is ready to be melted, a trigger switch in the primary winding is pulled. When primary current flows, a low voltage but high current is induced into the single-turn secondary. This current flows through the copper tip and heats it enough to melt the solder. As soon as the soldered joint is made, the trigger is released, and the tip cools off.
