A type of semiconductor diode whose resistance varies with the voltage across it. A switching diode acts as an open switch when the voltage across it is low, but when the voltage rises to a certain value, its resistance decreases, and the diode conducts, acting as a closed switch.

A type of shaft used to couple an intermittent load, such as a generator to an engine. A quill shaft is a long, thin, hardened steel shaft with splines on each end. One end splines into the engine and the other end splines into the generator.
When an electrical load is suddenly applied to the generator, the quill shaft absorbs the load by twisting. This prevents the load being applied to the gear train of the engine as a sudden shock.

A type of sheet-metal shop tool used to form large-radius curves in sheets of metal. Slip-roll formers have three hardened steel rollers mounted in a framework. One roller, the drive roller, is turned with a hand crank to pull the metal through the former. The clamp roller is adjustable up or down to clamp the sheet metal tightly against the drive roller.
The radius roller is adjustable so it can be pressed against the metal to bend it as the metal is pulled by the clamp roller and drive roller. This determines the radius of the bend.
