One of the fundamental building blocks of which all matter is made. There are just a few more than 100 different chemical elements. Some elements exist in nature by themselves, and others exist only in chemical compounds. Oxygen, carbon, gold, silver, and hydrogen are examples of chemical elements.

One of the gears in a planetary gear system. The teeth are on the inside of the ring gear, and the planetary gears mounted on pins fastened to the spider-like output shaft mesh with and ride between the inside the ring gear and the outside of the sun gear. The ring gear can be either rigidly mounted in the gear housing, or it can be driven by the input shaft, depending upon the gear ratio of the system. If the ring gear is rigidly mounted, the sun gear is driven by the input shaft.

One of the Greek letters which has a common usage in technology to mean a change in something. A small change is indicated by the lower-case letter delta (δ), and a larger change is shown by the use of a triangle, the upper-case letter delta (Δ).

One of the most widely used types of direct-current measuring instruments. In a D’Arsonval meter, a small coil carrying the current to be measured is mounted on pivots and suspended in the field of a permanent magnet. A pointer is attached to the coil, and the rotation of the coil is restrained by two calibrated hairsprings.
Current flowing through the coil produces a magnetic field that reacts with the field of the permanent magnet, and the coil rotates against the opposition of the hairsprings.
The greater the current flowing through the coil, the stronger its magnetic field and the farther the coil rotates. A pointer attached to the coil moves across a scale calibrated in amps, milliamps, or microamps.
D’Arsonval meters can be connected into circuits with multiplier resistors or shunts and can be used to measure voltage, current, or resistance.

One of the oldest of thermosetting plastic resins. Phenol-formaldehyde resin, called phenolic resin, has high strength and good chemical and electrical resistance and is low in cost. It may be reinforced with cloth or paper to make molded plastic objects.

One of the three physical forms of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. A liquid takes the shape of its container, but does not expand to fill the entire container. Water and gasoline are examples of liquids.

One of the two basic characteristics of a gyroscope. The other basic characteristic is rigidity in space. Precession causes a force applied to a spinning gyroscope to be felt, not at the point the force is applied, but at a point 90° in the direction of rotation from that point.

One of the two conditions (zero and one) used when working with digital electronic equipment. A logic one represents a YES or a TRUE condition, and it is produced by a closed switch or by the presence of a voltage.

One of the two conditions (zero and one) used when working with digital electronic equipment. A logic zero represents a NO or a FALSE condition, and it is produced by an open switch or by no voltage.
Industry:Aviation
One of the two junctions in a thermocouple system. The voltage produced by a thermocouple is determined by the difference in the temperature of the two junctions. By holding the temperature of the reference junction constant, the voltage produced by the system is determined by the temperature of the measuring junction.
