The increase in force or speed produced by a mechanical device, such as the lever, pulley, gears, or hydraulic cylinder. These devices increase speed or force, but they cannot produce work. The force needed to lift a weight may be reduced, or the speed at which an object moves may be changed. But if mechanical losses are discounted, the amount of work (force times distance) taken from the device is the same as the amount of work put into it.

The indication on a helicopter tachometer that shows the rotor clutch is not fully engaged. A helicopter tachometer has two needles; one shows the speed of the engine and the other, the speed of the main rotor. When the clutch is fully engaged and the rotor is coupled to the engine, the needles are “married”—one is directly on top of the other.
When the engine is started and the rotor is coming up to speed, the engine RPM needle is ahead of the rotor RPM needle. When the engine is throttled back, and the rotor freewheels, the rotor needle is ahead of the engine needle. In either case, the needles are said to be split.

The insulated block in a high-voltage magneto distributor to which the ignition leads attach. The distributor rotor passes near fixed contacts inside the distributor block, and the high-voltage current jumps from the rotor to the contact, then out the correct ignition lead to the spark plug. Distributor blocks are made of a plastic material having an extremely high dielectric strength.
