The maximum power an electrical component can dissipate without becoming overheated or otherwise damaged.
Industry:Aviation
The maximum speed a freely falling object can reach when falling through the air. At the terminal velocity, the wind resistance trying to slow the object down exactly balances the force of acceleration trying to speed the object up.
Industry:Aviation
The maximum speed an aircraft is allowed to attain in any conditions of flight. VNE is marked on the airspeed indicator with a red radial line.
Industry:Aviation
The maximum weight an aircraft is allowed to have for landing. Landings put far more stress into an aircraft structure than takeoffs, and therefore large aircraft that fly for long distances are allowed to have a greater weight for takeoff than for landing. Airplanes approved for a greater takeoff weight than landing weight must have some method of jettisoning enough fuel to bring the weight down to the allowable landing weight if the aircraft should have to land before enough fuel has been consumed by the engines.
Industry:Aviation
The maximum weight authorized for an aircraft that does not include the weight of the fuel.
Industry:Aviation
The measure of the ability of a lubricant to maintain a continuous film without breaking down under mechanical pressure.
Industry:Aviation
The measuring element used in certain types of pressure-measuring instruments. A thin-walled metal tube, having an elliptical cross section, is formed into a curve. One end of the tube is sealed and is connected to an arm that moves a pointer. The other end of the tube is open and is secured to the instrument case. The pressure to be measured is connected to the open end of the tube, and this pressure causes the elliptical cross section to try to become round and thus begin to straighten the tube. The amount the tube straightens is proportional to the pressure inside the tube, and as it straightens, it moves a pointer across the calibrated instrument dial.
Industry:Aviation
The mechanism in an AC ammeter whose pointer is attached to a soft iron vane and restrained by a calibrated hairspring. The vane is rotated by the magnetic field produced by the unknown current flowing through a surrounding coil. The greater the current, the stronger the magnetic field and the greater the pointer deflection.
Industry:Aviation
The metal being welded. This term is used to distinguish it from the metal of the welding rod.
Industry:Aviation
The meteorological conditions, including temperature, precipitation, and wind that characteristically prevail in a region or area.
