Široka definisano kao nauka ili teorija o znacima, ono što je Sosir zvao "semiologijom" je nauka koja proučava ulogu znakova kao delova društvenog života. Sosirova upotreba termina semiologija datira iz 1894. godine dok je Pirs prvi put upotrebio termin semiotika 1897. godine. Semiotika nije široko prihvaćena kao formalna akademska disciplina i ne predstavlja nauku u pravom smislu. Ali nije ni samo metod analize teksta, jer uključuje teoriju i analizu znakova i praksu dodeljivanja značenja.
