Indignants movement
A mass movement that started in Spain in May 2011 to protest against economic injustice as the impact of Spain's deepest economic crisis in decades created record high unemployment and led to a series of government's austerity measures. Relying heavily on online social networks to organise and campaign, the movement quickly gained widespread popularity globally, inspiring similar protests in Britain and the Occupy Wall Street campaign in the United States.
Tens of thousands of activists packed Madrid's central Puerta del Sol square on Saturday, May 12, 2012, to mark the movement's one year anniversary. The square is the emblematic birthplace of the Indigants movement against inequality, sky-high unemployment and spending cuts that shook the political establishment in many countries.
