Riffle

A piece of wood, metal or plastic that is attached to the stern, underwater, of a sprint kayak to assist in steering the boat. Rudders are not allowed on slalom kayaks or canoes but a canoeist can create his own rudder by dragging the paddle to create resistance, which in turn causes the stern of a canoe to turn in the direction of the rudder side. This manoeuvre is performed by the sternsman.
