relief pitcher

This is a pitcher who comes into the game while the game is in progress. He usually replaces a starting pitcher who is having problems pitching for one reason or another or who has thrown a lot of pitches. The Relief Pitcher will usually pitch in the 7th and maybe 8th inning and then the Closing Pitcher will come in and pitch the 9th inning. The Relief Pitcher is also called a Setup Pitcher or a Setup Man, because he is setting up the final inning for the Closing Pitcher.
